Prince Harry Is Returning to the UK, But Can He Reconcile With William?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to return to the United Kingdom with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The move has already raised questions about where the family will live, how their security will be handled and whether they could ever return to royal duties.

Yet the most closely watched issue may be much more personal: can Harry rebuild his damaged relationship with his older brother, Prince William?

The brothers were once closely connected, but their relationship has deteriorated over several years. Harry’s public criticism of the royal family, his interviews with Meghan and the release of his memoir “Spare” created a deep divide.

Now, with Harry and Meghan planning a new chapter in Britain, attention is turning toward whether time and family ties can repair what has been broken.

Why Harry and Meghan Are Returning

British media reports say Harry and Meghan are expected to settle at a private, nonroyal home outside London. Their children are also expected to attend British schools, allowing Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, to begin the autumn term alongside other students.

The couple left their working royal roles in 2020 and moved to Montecito, California, where they began building an independent life. Their return does not currently indicate a plan to resume royal duties.

Several factors appear to have influenced the decision. Harry has repeatedly spoken about wanting his children to understand their British heritage. His father, King Charles III, is also continuing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer diagnosed in 2024.

Harry previously expressed concern about how much time his father might have left. That has added a personal dimension to his wish for Archie and Lilibet to spend more time with their grandfather.

Royal historian Ed Owens said recent developments created a possible route back to Britain. Harry had already spoken publicly about reconciliation, while a recent meeting with Charles, Meghan and the children at the king’s Highgrove estate appeared to go well.

Owens, who wrote “After Elizabeth: Can the Monarchy Save Itself?”, also pointed to Harry’s desire for his children to grow up British and his view that Britain may currently offer a more stable environment than the deeply divided political climate in the United States.

William Remains the Biggest Challenge

A better relationship with Charles may be possible, but Harry’s relationship with William is likely to be harder to repair.

The brothers have faced years of tension. Harry has accused members of the royal household of failing to support Meghan and has spoken publicly about feeling mistreated by palace officials. Meghan has also discussed her mental health struggles and alleged that a member of the royal family made a comment about the potential skin color of her and Harry’s first child.

Harry discussed the family conflict during his 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. When asked why he and Meghan had decided to leave Britain, he described the problem as a “lack of support and lack of understanding.”

Those public revelations placed William in an especially difficult position. As the heir to the throne, he has a direct role in the future of the monarchy. Harry’s decision to speak publicly about private family matters has also made a quiet reconciliation far more complicated.

Craig Prescott, an expert on the U.K. constitution and monarchy at Royal Holloway University of London, said the palace will have to consider how Harry and Meghan’s return could affect the wider royal family.

“They wouldn’t want Meghan and Harry’s presence in the U.K. here to overshadow the work of the monarchy,” Prescott told The Associated Press, adding that discussions and adjustments would likely be necessary.

Could Charles Forgive Harry?

Harry’s relationship with King Charles may have more room for improvement.

Owens believes Charles could eventually forgive his younger son. He linked that possibility to Charles’ role as supreme governor of the Church of England and the Christian principle of forgiveness.

William may take longer.

“It may be that privately William never fully forgives his younger brother for what he deems the betrayal of the family,” Owens told The Associated Press.

At the same time, Owens believes William could eventually support a public reconciliation. As the future head of the Church of England, William would also face expectations connected to traditional Christian values and forgiveness.

That does not necessarily mean the brothers would return to the relationship they had before. Public reconciliation and private trust are two different things. A repaired relationship could take years and may depend on what both men are willing to leave in the past.

The Media Has Made the Rift Harder

The family dispute has also been tied to Harry’s long-running legal battles with British newspapers.

Harry has accused British tabloid publishers of unlawfully accessing private information and invading his privacy. His legal disputes have kept his relationship with the British press in the public eye even as his family tensions have continued.

One major case involved Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail. Harry and other plaintiffs lost their lawsuit against the publisher, leaving them facing a potentially significant legal bill. Court documents filed by Associated Newspapers put its legal costs at £34.5 million, or about $47 million.

The legal pressure has added another layer to Harry’s relationship with Britain. His concerns about safety have also remained unresolved.

Security Could Become Flashpoint

Harry has separately challenged decisions concerning police protection for himself and his family during visits to the United Kingdom.

He has argued that armed police protection is necessary because of the risks associated with being a member of the royal family, even though he no longer performs official royal duties.

Harry lost his court challenge against the committee responsible for the decision in May 2025. At the time, he also spoke about his desire to repair family relationships while continuing to criticize people in Britain whom he believed had treated him and Meghan unfairly.

“I can’t see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the U.K. at this point,” Harry told the BBC then. He also said he loved his country despite what some people there had done.

His planned return now represents a significant change from that position.

Will Harry and Meghan Steal the Spotlight?

Another concern is how the family will appear together in public.

Harry and Meghan remain internationally recognized figures with their own media profile, while William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, represent the future of the monarchy. Their appearances together could therefore attract intense public and media attention.

The palace may need to manage those appearances carefully. Harry and Meghan are not expected to resume royal duties, so their presence will likely remain separate from the official work carried out by William, Catherine and other working royals.

That distinction could help reduce competition between the two couples. Still, public interest in the brothers is unlikely to disappear simply because their roles are different.

Time Could Change the Relationship

The latest developments may shift attention away from years of accusations and toward the possibility of reconciliation.

Owens believes time can create space between painful events and future conversations. In a world where social media keeps old disputes alive, distance can sometimes allow emotions to settle.

“I think time is a great healer,” Owens said. “It creates space in a social media-saturated world.”

The recent meeting at Highgrove may also prove important. While it does not confirm that the family has resolved its differences, a cordial meeting involving Charles, Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet suggests that communication remains possible.

The next challenge is whether that communication can extend to William.

What Harry’s Return Could Mean

Harry’s return to Britain does not automatically signal the end of the royal family’s internal conflict, but it creates an opportunity for renewed contact. The recent Highgrove meeting, Harry’s repeated calls for reconciliation and his desire for Archie and Lilibet to know Britain suggest that the door to rebuilding family relationships remains open.

Charles may be willing to repair his relationship with his son, particularly as he continues his cancer treatment and spends time with his grandchildren. William’s position is more complicated, given the depth of the brothers’ disagreements and his future responsibilities as king.

For now, Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet are geographically closer to the royal family than they have been in years. However, unresolved issues surrounding trust, privacy, security, media coverage and past accusations remain.

Whether the family can overcome these differences will depend on personal choices rather than public appearances. Charles may be prepared to forgive, while William may need more time. The coming months will reveal whether Harry’s return marks the beginning of a quieter family relationship or another chapter in a dispute that has played out publicly for years.
